Get things rolling - Moving mobility forward in the Alps

CIPRAs Annual Conference on 16 and 17 October 2026 in Bolzano/IT. How much private and transit traffic can the Alpine region actually cope with? And who pays the price? More traffic does not only mean convenience, freedom of choice and economic dynamism, but also more noise, poorer air quality, land consumption and a profound impact on the daily lives of local people. Whilst visitors, goods and commuters cover ever greater distances at ever greater speeds, a good quality of life, peace and space are becoming increasingly scarce in the “Alpine transit corridor”. Furthermore, more roads and railway lines are cutting through wildlife habitats.

Join us in discussing what strategies and solutions are needed to make transport more sustainable for local communities and ecosystems. How can we move from familiar proposals to effective measures, rather than getting stuck at the planning stage? Is building new (basic) tunnels enough? What further political, logistical and economic conditions are needed to ensure that the shift of freight transport to rail actually takes place? And how can we ensure that both commuters and travellers not only talk about alternative mobility, but actually use it? What practical everyday options and compelling incentive schemes are needed to encourage the switch from car to train, bus or bicycle?

Brenner Base Tunnel Site Visit

Exclusive insights into the planning, construction and future role of the world’s longest railway tunnel. (Participation fee: €20). This excursion will be conducted in English.

For safety reasons, the following persons are excluded from taking part in this excursion:

People with pacemakers or defibrillators
People with walking difficulties (e.g. wheelchair users, those using crutches, leg supports, walking aids, etc.)

A mobility experience in the Bolzano area

Journey from Bolzano on the Ritten cable car, continuing on the historic Ritten narrow-gauge railway to Klobenstein, followed by a walk. (Participation fee: €20)
